The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) in its yearly publication titled Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India reports 11 main causes of death in India from road accidents. The total deaths in India from road accidents is 148707.
The top 4 causes of road accidents are dangerous/careless/ overtaking, speeding, other causes and weather. These 4 causes account to 89% of the total deaths from road accidents.
Speeding alone is responsible for 41% of fatal traffic accidents. Fatal accidents due to speeding are highest in states such as Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra. The second leading cause for fatal traffic accident is dangerous or careless driving or overtaking. About 8000 fatal traffic accidents occurred in Uttar Pradesh due to dangerous and careless driving.
The next four causes of fatal traffic accidents are defect in mechanical condition, causes not known, Driving Under Influence (DUI) and vehicle parking at the road shoulder. DUI is a common cause for fatal traffic accidents in Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand.
The remaining three causes for fatal traffic accidents are lack of infrastructure, animal crossing and physical fatigue of the driver. These causes combined account to 2.45% of the total fatal traffic accidents.
